BlackBerry Mobile was once one of the most iconic and influential smartphone brands in the world. Founded in 1984 as Research In Motion (RIM) in Canada, BlackBerry became a global leader in mobile communication during the early 2000s. The brand gained massive popularity for its QWERTY keyboard smartphones, high-level security, and BlackBerry Messenger (BBM)—a service that defined instant mobile communication long before WhatsApp or Messenger existed.
BlackBerry’s identity has always been tied to productivity, privacy, and enterprise solutions. Governments, corporations, and business leaders worldwide relied on BlackBerry devices for their encrypted email services and unmatched data protection, giving the brand a reputation as the gold standard in secure communication.
However, with the rise of Android and iOS, BlackBerry’s dominance declined. The company stopped producing its own smartphones in 2016 and instead licensed its brand to TCL Communication, which released Android-powered BlackBerry models like the KEYone, KEY2, and Motion. These devices attempted to blend BlackBerry’s trademark physical keyboards with modern Android features.
By 2025, BlackBerry no longer manufactures or actively sells new smartphones, but the brand still holds strong recognition worldwide. In Bangladesh, BlackBerry mobiles are mostly seen in the second-hand or collector’s market, where models such as the BlackBerry Passport, KEY2, and Classic remain popular among enthusiasts who value the unique design and nostalgia.
Today, BlackBerry Limited has shifted its focus away from consumer phones and now operates mainly as a software and cybersecurity company, providing secure communication platforms, IoT solutions, and enterprise-grade security systems for businesses and governments. Still, the BlackBerry Mobile brand is remembered in Bangladesh as a symbol of prestige, professionalism, and security, often associated with business-class users.
